Session Title Description
2009 Federal and State Financial Aid Update
The presentation will focus on current Federal and State financial aid resources for college-bound students, including the latest happenings in Washington D.C. as they relate to financial aid. Particular focus will be given to the Frank O’Bannon award calculation formula and the benefits students may receive when their Core 40 or Academic Honors Diploma type is reported by their guidance counselor to SSACI’s Core 40 and Honors Internet Update System (CHIPS).
Art Therapy with Youth
Art Therapy originated in a school and continues to enhance the mental and emotional well-being of school children across the United States. The use of art in counseling adds an engaging dimension to assessment and treatment. "Art Therapy in Schools" will present an overview of Art Therapy as a profession, followed by examples of its use in school settings. Participants will learn therapeutic art techniques and directives that can be used in public, private, and alternative school settings.
Assessment as a Component of Response to Intervention - Implications for Student Assistance Professionals
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a data-driven process. When the concern is behavioral, social/emotional and/or mental health-related, student assistance professionals may be called upon to identify and/or administer assessments and use results to assist in the development of goals and interventions based on identified student needs. This presentation will provide information and resources for possible assessment tools at each “tier” of the RTI process.
Assisting Students through the College Choice Process: Asking the Right Questions
Selecting the right college is one of the most important decisions a student will make. Simply comparing admission test scores and popular media rankings does not provide the type of in depth information needed to understand how a student will develop, learn and grow at a given institution. This presentation will demonstrate the usefulness of A Pocket Guide to Choosing a College: “Are You Asking the Right Questions..” and its accompanying reports as a college exploration tool. The Pocket Guide is a free tool that may be used by students, as well as professionals and administrators assisting these students in their college decision process. The information in the Pocket Guide is based on data from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), which annually surveys students from 4-year colleges and universities nationwide.
Bartholomew Youth Services Center
Often overlooked in our efforts at youth development are young people involved in the juvenile justice system. Youth development is (or should be) about developing ALL young people into productive, contributing, healthy members of society. This workshop will address issues related to engaging and working effectively with this population.
Building a Successful Financial Literacy Program
Many of today's students lack basic financial literacy skills which are needed to make wise choices regarding postsecondary educational options. Professionals can help them manage their money and make smarter financial choices through community or campus-based financial literacy programs. This interactive workshop will provide participants with critical information and skills they need in order to create and sustain such an initiative. Participants will learn tips and strategies for developing their own financial literacy initiatives. They''ll also learn how to identify areas for improvement, take away best practices from specific case studies, and hear about TG''s financial literacy tools and solutions.
Care for the Caregiver; The Healing Power of Telling Our Stories
Based on research and years of aneccdotal evidence supporting the healing and restorative effects of writing in supportive community, this workshop will use poetry, prompts, large and smaller group processes to free voice, guide and inspire anyone interested in exploring in depth how writing can support inner authority, healing, and transformation and is open to all writers, experienced and less experienced.
Collaborating with Government Agencies
This presentation will discuss the various challenges and benefits of collaboration with government agencies, the importance of pro-active communication and the essential work we do in educating others about mental illness to inform their work with shared clients and their families, as well as advocating for those clients. Discussion of working with resistant and difficult mandated clients will also be included.
Confidentiality and Privilege in the Provision of School Counseling Services
This session will provide an update/review of federal and state laws, rules and policies regarding confidentiality and privilege affecting counseling services to children in school. Discussion will include alcohol and drug issues, mental health services, HIPAA, due process of children in school and state administrative policies regarding services to children.
Connecting With Our Youth Through Drumming (No Experience Needed)
This workshop will demonstrate the empowering effectiveness of drum circles with children, adolescents and youth care workers. The participants will experience being in a drum circle and learn how to implement a group at their agency or organization. One of the main goals of the workshop is to learn and understand a new and unique approach to helping youth care workers connect with children and adolescents. Drum groups have been used with cancer patients, retirement communities, detention centers, and mental health centers. Drum circles have also been used in major companies to help reduce stress and create a more productive environment.
